Horse riding options around Queenstown.
Horse riding is a nice way of soaking up the alpine atmosphere of the Wakatipu valley. There are three horse riding stables close to Queenstown. There are two stables at Glenorchy. All stables can cater for the novice rider.
Moonlight Stables.
To the right you see a view from a Moonlight stables trail that is at the Arrow junction area. Three trips per day 9.30am, 1.30pm, 4.30pm (summer only) with a full day option available. 1 hr 30 minutes horse ride, allow for 2hrs 30 minutes round trip from Queenstown. Ride amongst the animals on a typical deer farm and enjoy the spectacular alpine views of the Remarkables' and Coronet Peak ski area. You'll enjoy seeing grazing elk and rare white fallow deer on the 800 acre Doon holme farm. The views will take your breath away.
The Shotover Stables
This is the closet stables to Queenstown. The horses can be seen walking the river valley track in the lower Shotover. The stables are situated in the heart of the Wakatipu basin. With views of Coronet peak, the Remarkables mountain ranges and Crown ranges. They are only a 10 minute drive from town. Free pick up from Queenstown or your accommodation can be provided.
A ride on the horses can easily be completed in 1.5 hours. There are 3 rides a day with departure times at 9.30am 1.30pm and 3.30pm. They can easily arrange to pick you up from Trelawn Place as they drive past our gateway.
Ben Lomond Station Horse Trekking
This horse trek company will take you around a remote part of the Queenstown area. The Moke lake area offers some dramatic scenery. This area is rich in the regions gold history – visit the remains of Sefferstown - a historic gold mining village. Braided rivers offer fabulous river crossings. 15 minutes from Queenstown.
Walter Peak High Country Farm
A 40 minute ride can be had with the 12 noon and the 2pm sailings. Or if you like have a ride on a 100 year old wagon with a team of Clydesdale horses around the farm. At the Walter Peak High Country Farm disembark from the steamship TSS Earnslaw and join a guided horse trek. Our experienced guides will take you across rolling farm terraces to an outlook with spectacular views of the Wakatipu scenery. Your horse trek takes around 40 minutes and is followed by morning or afternoon tea. The duration of the excursion is 3hrs 35mins.
Safety helmets and wet weather clothing are provided for the treks.
Suitable for inexperienced riders. Suitable for children 8 years and over.
